August 27/28, 1943

    55 Halifaxes from 419, 427, 428, and 434 squadrons were joined by 11 Lancasters from 426 squadron on an attack at Nurnberg. The crews were over the target at between 17,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 142,000 lbs of high explosives and 130,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports most of the bombing south and eastern sectors with some in open country.

    Sgt. E. Marjoram from 419 squadron returned early as the navigation aids were u/s.
    F/O H. Brown had the port outer engine go u/s outbound. They bombed from 9,000 feet and returned safely to base on 3 engines.
    Sgt. C. Coutlee was attacked by a JU-88. It was claimed destroyed.
    Sgt. K. White landed at Tangmere on return.

    F/Lt. A. Hughes from 426 squadron returned early as the stbd inner engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    2nd/ Lt. S. Gaunt was attacked by an enemy aircraft. It was claimed destroyed.

    Sgt. B. Buxton from 427 squadron returned early, the Flt/engineer was unconsious. 
    P/O W. Weston was attacked by an enemy aircraft. There was no claim or damage.
    Sgt. H. Holland had the stbd outer engine go u/s on return.. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    Sgt. R. Deegan was hit by flak. The port outer was u/s and caught fire. They landed safely at Ford on 3 engines due to low fuel.

    Sgt. W. Brown from 428 squadron returned early as they would have been late over the target.
    Sgt. N. Neilson returned early as some instruments were u/s.
    F/Sgt. W. Kruse returned early as the port outer engine was u/s. They landed safely at Tangmere on 3 engines.
    P/O R. Eaton was attacked by a JU-88. The Halifax had 50 to 60 holes in the fuselage and the JU-88 was claimed destroyed.
    Sgt. A.Mitchell, RAF and crew, flying Halifax V  EB-216 coded NA-R, failed to return from this operation.

    Sgt. E. Ells from 434 squadron returned early as the port outer engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    Sgt. O. Lytle and Sgt. J. Snelgove landed at Ford on return.
    Sgt. R. Pratt and F/O C. Popplewell landed at Tangmere on return.
    W/O2 T. Thould, RCAF and crew, flying Halifax V  DK-258  WL-X, failed to return from this operation.

    2 crew were killed and 6 POWs after being shot down by a Nightfighter.
    W/O2 H. Mallory was later killed in a POW camp after a very low flying JU-88 hit him while exercising in the compound. The JU-88 took out part of the compound fencing on departure.
