December 5/6, 1944



    152 Halifaxes from 408, 415, 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 429, 432, 433, and 434 squadrons were joined by 42 Lancasters from 419, 428, and 431 squadrons on an attack at Soest. The crews were over the target between 17,000 and 19,000 feet, releasing 1,348,000 lbs of high explosives and 335,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports there was severe damage in the northern part of the town that contained the rail yards.

    F/Lt. W. Smith from 408 squadron was hit by flak, the stbd fuel tank was hit and leaking.

    P/O W. Lane from 415 squadron returned early as the port outer was u/s and the port inner was running poorly. They landed safely at Hardwick on 3 engines due to a fuel shortage.
    F/O L. Belcher was hit by flak, not serious.
    F/O E. Millbank landed at Hardwick due to a fuel shortage.
    F/O C. Chartier collided with another Halifax on return. The astrodome and the top of the fuselage was torn off. The instrument panel was shattered. They landed safely at base without injuries.

    F/O G. Sheahan from 419 squadron was hit by flak, the stbd outer was u/s and port elevator damaged. The landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/O G. Begg landed at Eye on return.

    F/O E. Watson from 420 squadron returned early as the hydraulics were u/s.

    F/O D. Saunders from 424 squadron landed at Horham on return due to a fuel shortage.

    P/O G. Chabot from 425 squadron landed at Old Buckenham due to a fuel shortage.

    F/O R. Brodie from 426 Squadron landed at Shipdam due to a fuel shortage.
    F/O H. Watts and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-779 coded OW-C, were attacked by an ME-109, some strikes were seen.
    F/Lt. P. Chipman, RCAF (POW)  and crew failed to return from this operation

    F/O A. Carter RCAF and crew, flying Halifax VII LW-200 coded OW-N, were involved in a mid-air collision with a 428 squadron aircraft.

    All were killed.

    F/Lt. J. Murphy from 427 squadron returned early as the oxygen system was u/s.
    P/O D. Murray returned early as an engine was u/s after takeoff. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/Lt. D. Hepburn landed at Woodbridge due to low brake pressure.
    F/O W. Walker and crew, flying Halifax III NP-941 coded ZL-X, were attacked by an FW-190, there was no claim or damage.

    F/Lt. H. Shewfelt, RCAF and crew from 428 squadron were involved in a mid-air collision with a 426 squadron aircraft.

    There were no survivors.

    F/Lt R. Kingsland from 429 squadron was hit by flak. The hydraulics were damaged.
    F/O C. Pope landed at Mendlesham Heath due to a fuel shortage.

    F/O E. Tuckey from 431 squadron had the stbd outer go u/s on return. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/Lt D. Borland was hit by flak. The rear turret was damaged.
    F/O B. Kaplansky was hit by flak. There were holes in the port wing and fuselage. P/O E. Walters RCAF, the mid-upper gunner was also injured. They landed at Eye on return.

    F/O G. Peaker from 432 squadron returned early as they could not raise the under carriage.
    F/O F. Baxter RCAF and crew, flying Halifax VII NP-721 coded QO-X, swung on takeoff and crashed. The Halifax caught fire and blew up. The crew escaped without injury.

    F/Lt. R. Paterson and F/Lt. D. Rogers from 433 squadron landed at Horham due to a fuel shortage.

    F/O T. Kowalchuk, RCAF and crew from 434 squadron failed to return from this operation.
