February 16/17, 1943

    24 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadrons were joined by 56 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, and 429 Squadrons on an attack at Lorient. The crews were over the target at between 12,000 and 18,000 feet, releasing 206,000 lbs of high explosives and 137,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports severe damage again was caused on this attack.

    P/O T. Cornwall from 408 Squadron returned early due to the oxygen system being u/s.
    P/O B. Harriss and crew flying Halifax II DT-752 coded EQ-W were attacked by 5 FW-190s, strikes were seen on one enemy aircraft.

    Sgt G. Cooke, F/Sgt J. Thomson, and Sgt P. Cozens from 420 Squadron landed at Moreton-in-the-Marsh on return.

    Sgt A. Grout from 424 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious, they landed at Beaulieu on return.
    F/Sgt J. Ryan, Sgt L. Wilson, and Sgt R. Caldwell landed at Beaulieu on return.
    Sgt B. Sorge was hit by flak, not serious.
    F/Sgt G. Leddy landed at Yeovilton on return.
    Sgt A. McManus landed at Hullavington on return due to a fuel shortage.

    W/O2 P. Maries from 426 Squadron was hit by flak, there was a 2 foot square hole in the port wing. They landed safely at Hurn.
    Sgt I. Runciman landed at Talbenny on return.
    Sgt A. Steen landed at Saltby due to a fuel shortage.

    Sgt A. Rodwell from 427 Squadron landed at Hemswell on return.
    F/Sgt B. Crew landed at Boscombe Down on return.
    Sgt J. Holloway RAF and crew, flying Wellington III  Z-1676 coded ZL-S, failed to return from this operation.

    This crew was hit by flak, they force landed in Ireland and burned their aircraft. All the crew were interned.

    Sgt J. Ferguson from 428 Squadron was hit by flak, there were holes in the port tail plane. They landed at Boscombe Down on return.
    Sgt L. Williamson landed at Boscombe Down due to a fuel shortage.
    Sgt L. Straight landed at Finningley due to a fuel shortage.

    Sgt S. Hanan from 429 Squadron returned early as the oxygen system was u/s.
