January 23, 1943

    Six Wellingtons from 420 and 425 Squadrons were ordered to  attack Esens in daylight. The crews were over the target at between  1000 to 2000 feet, releasing 15,000 lbs of high explosive. 

    Three crews from 420 squadron departed base at between 11:56 and 11:57, they were over the target at between 14:30 and 14:32, returning to base at between 16:50 and 17:34. 

    F/Sgt R. Taylor and crew, flying Wellington III  BK-330 coded PT-K,  were hit by flak. There were small holes through out the fuselage but the crew brought their aircraft safely back to base.

    S/Ldr D. Jacobs and crew, flying Wellington III  BK-365 coded PT-L,  attacked a railway station from 100 feet. They also shot up a train on return.

    Three crews from 425 Squadron departed base at between 12:00 and 12:20, returning at between 16:54 and 17:07.

    S/Ldr G. Roy and crew, flying Wellington III  BJ-652 coded KW-E,  returned early due to being hit by flak over Juist.
    P/O S. Murrell and crew, flying Wellington III  X-3872 coded KW-A, were hit by flak, the damage wasn’t serious.

    425 Squadron sent 5 Wellingtons out on a sea search. They returned to base unsuccessful.
