    18 Halifaxes from 408 and 419 Squadron were joined by 60 Wellingtons from 420, 424, 425, 426, 427, 428, and 429 Squadrons on an attack at Hamburg. The crews were over the target at between 14,000 and 20,000 feet, releasing 133,000 lbs of high explosives and 128,000 lbs of incendiaries. According to reports, the attack was not accurate with some damage being caused.

    Sgt A. Grant from 408 Squadron returned early, as all the guns were u/s.
    F/O B. Harris was hit by flak, the port wing and fuselage was damaged.
    F/Lt R. Gamble had the port outer u/s on return. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.

    Sgt B. Heintz from 419 Squadron returned early as the rear turret was u/s.
    W/O1 W. McMillan and crew flying Halifax II DT-548 coded VR-M returned early as one engine was u/s. They also were attacked by a unidentified single engine aircraft, there was no claim or damage. They landed safely at base on 3 engines.
    F/Lt G. De Sells and crew flying Halifax II DT-617 coded VR-C were attacked by a unidentified twin engine aircraft, there was no claim or damage.
    Sgt T. Jackson was hit by flak, not serious.
    P/O J. Dickson and crew flying Halifax DT-669 coded VR-L were attacked by a JU-88 and an ME-110. Both were shot down in flames.
    All crews reported intense flak over the target.

    Sgt T. Lawson from 420 Squadron returned early, as the pilot was sick.

    S/Ldr W. Allison from 424 Squadron was hit by flak, not serious.

    P/O J. Gauthier RCAF and crew, from 425 Squadron, flying Wellington III BK-344 coded KW-B, failed to return from this operation.

    All were killed.

    Sgt D. Lloyd from 426 Squadron returned early as one engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.
    F/O L. Merrifield returned early as the stbd engine was u/s. They landed safely at base on one engine.

    Sgt W. Schmitt from 427 Squadron returned early, as the compasses were u/s.
    S/Ldr C. Earthrowl and crew flying Wellington X HZ-264 coded ZL-L were attacked by a JU-88, no claim was made but they suffered a few holes in the wing and fuel tank.

    Sgt W. Harris from 428 Squadron returned early as the rear turret was u/s. The landed at Dalton on return.
    Sgt C. Pearce was hit by flak, not serious.
    W/O1 A. Harrison, Sgt W. Pepper, Sgt K. Knapp, Sgt J. Ferguson, Sgt P. Manning and Sgt V. Sylvester landed at Leeming on return due to poor weather at base.

    Sgt H. Carty from 429 Squadron returned early with a technical problem.
     

    While some crews went to Hamburg, 7 Wellingtons from 431 Squadron were ordered on a mining operation to the Frisian Islands. The crews were over the garden at 5,000 feet, sowing 10@1500 lb mines.

    F/O D. Hine reurned early as the throttles were jamed.
    Sgt G. Wood returned early as the navigation aids were u/s.
    Sgt J. Morton was attacked by a JU-88. The under carriage was damaged and a fire started behind the cockpit. They belly-landed at base with no injuries to the crew.
